Neostrata AHA’s can help improve sun damaged skin

by admin on June 20, 2011

What are AHAs? And how can I improve my sun damaged skin?

I am often asked “How can I improve my sun damaged skin?” The answer – Simply by using AHA products. AHA means alpha hydroxy acid. The most commonly used AHAs are glycolic acid, lactic acid and citric acid.

AHAs eseentially:
1. Exfoliate the skin – they help detach keratin in the cornified layer of the epidermis (stratum corneum) and they facilitate the development of a new layer.
2. Hydrate the skin – their small molecular size helps them to penetrate the skin taking with them molecules of water thus moisturising the skin.
3. Stimulate collagen production – when applied to sun damaged skin they stimulate collagen production thickening the skin.
4. Reduce pigmentation – AHAs may reduce pigmentation.

Sun damaged skin is dry, crusty, red, pigmented and sometimes sore to touch. Using AHA preparations can make the skin look and feel better.

Neostrata AHA skin care products
We use and recommend Neostrata products. Their AHA products contain glycolic acid or fruit acids. They are reasonably priced and available from pharmacies. Other brands are available, look for the letters AHA and check the percentage. Use the highest percentage you can tolerate.

Side effects: the stronger preparations sometimes sting for a short time after application. They may cause sensitivity to sunlight and if this occurs restricting their use to night time may be the answer.
