SkinMap – The most effective Mole Check system in Brisbane

What is SkinMap?

Skin Map SkinMap is total body photography for the early detection of melanoma or skin cancer and is a service being offered here at Dr Ian Johnson’s MoleScreen skin cancer clinic in Brisbane; a specialised practice with over 14 years experience in the early detection and treatment of skin cancer. Your own mole check here in Brisbane.

SkinMap is a record of your skin using high resolution photography with the latest software from Germany. In our Skin Cancer detection studio we will take a minimum of 27 high resolution images to give you a complete record of your skin from head to toe…through 360 degrees! You will receive a CD with the complete set of your photos so that you can do some self checks at home in between visits to our clinic.

Why do you Need SkinMap?

1 in 19 Queenslanders are affected by melanoma. Melanoma may be caused by just two episodes of sunburn before the age of 20. 70% of Melanomas are new moles, the rest are changes to existing moles.

Would you notice a change in your own skin?

Who Needs SkinMap?

Anyone who cares about their health but in particular you should have one if you have a high risk of melanoma which includes one or more of the following:

  • lots of moles
  • dysplastic naevi (moles that are over 6mm in diametre with an irregular ill-defined border and several shades of colour)
  • previous melanoma or abnormal moles
  • family history of melanoma
  • fair skin or red hair
  • blue eyes
  • chemotherapy or radiation
  • drugs that may have suppressed your immune system such as those used for some skin conditions, rheumatoid arthritis or inflammatory bowel disease
  • previous history of cancer
  • previous ultra violet light skin treatments for acne
  • solarium use

Make an appointment for your SkinMap session with our receptionist and you will have a set of baseline images. Living in Queensland, the skin cancer capital of the world, exposure to the sun over a period of time will definitely cause your skin to deteriorate but this can be managed to reduce your chances of Skin Cancer. We give you a full copy of the images so you can start to do regular skin checks at home between visits.

Preparing for your SkinMap Session.

Please allow at least 45 minutes for your session and remember the following:

  1. Please do not wear any make-up, deodorant, artificial tanning lotions, talcum powder or nail polish.
  2. This will help ensure that your skin is analysed without anything altering its appearance.
  3. If you normally remove body hair by shaving, waxing, etc it would be ideal to do this prior to your SkinMap session.
  4. You will be asked to remove jewelry.
  5. If you have medium to long length hair, please tie it back so that the neck and shoulder areas are not obscured.
