SKIN CANCER TREATMENT – We recommend PDT – The Best Non Surgical,Non Scarring treatment in Brisbane
Skin cancer treatment has for many years been carried out involving full surgery and scarring, however Brisbane now has a state of the art facility that treats skin cancer without surgery and avoiding scarring, it is called PDT.
What is PDT?
PDT or PhotoDynamic Therapy is the non-surgical, non-scarring treatment for the removal of:
- Sun spots (solar keratosis or actinic keratosis) including lips
- Sun damaged skin
- Thin BCCs (basal cell carcinomas)
- Bowens Disease (thin squamous cell carcinomas)
It can be used on any area of the skin except for around the eyes.
It is not officially considered as a cosmetic treatment but it often results in significant improvement in appearance. It has a very high success rate.
It simply works by using oxygen within abnormal skin cells to destroy those cells. Metvix® is absorbed into the abnormal skin over a 3 – 4 hour period. Normal skin does not readily absorb it. A very powerful red light is then shone on the treated area for about 9 minutes. The red light has a specific wavelength that causes the Metvix® to vibrate and release oxygen. This high level of oxygen kills the cell. A bit like weeding a lawn. All that is left is normal skin. The process is usually repeated after a few weeks, occasionally only one treatment is required and sometimes a third treatment. We use ultraviolet light to assess the amount of absorption prior to using the red light. The patient is seen at three months to check the success of the treatment. PDT has brought a reliable, high quality resource to Skin Cancer Treatment in Brisbane.
The treated area is red and swollen for 4 or 5 days. You are sensitive to sunlight for about 36 hours.
The area requires maintenance during that time with frequent cleaning and application of moisturisers.
Single cancers can be treated or large areas of solar keratoses. Skin ultrasound is used to assess the thickness of the skin cancer. If the cancer is too thick then surgery may be the best option. It is possible to thin the cancer by shaving before treatment with Metvix® to enhance the prospects of success.
One of the significant benefits of Metvix® is that it will seek out skin cancers that are not visible (see graphic). It can be used after surgery for skin cancer to “reset the clock” to reduce the risk of more cancers in that area. Very useful after the stress of having a cancer removed for example from the nose.
